The Ugly Movie Review
The movie premise is interesting. Police called a man regarding A woman remains are found after 40 years missing. The man is the woman son. He never see his mother before. It is pretty emotional occasion which on top of this police also suspect there is a foul play in the woman death. Although full legal trial won't be possible anymore due to statutory limitations that has passed for very long time.
The father, the woman husband is a blind stamp maker. Usually use as a form signature in south korea documentation system. He live very poorly long time ago. But in the present time the blind man has been knows as really talented stamp msker with excellent craft. A TV channel was in progress of making documentary about the stamp maker when the foul play news come in.
The movie progresses as the documentary producer pivot the production beyond stamp maker crafting but also investigating the death of the woman. Initial investigation which was done by interviewing different People connected to the woman bring an somewhat non substantial fact that the woman was a very ugly woman. There was the movie title come from. During the whole flashback scene we never see the woman face. Only shot from behind, side or rare front shot where face are covered by messy hair.
She was working in a textile factory as sewer assistant. Work really hard with inhuman working conditions. There also where the woman met the blind stamp maker and get married. Being ugly seem is not relevant in the begining for a blind husband prospect. Although this fact changes later.
The investigation keep digging to different people by the woman son and helped significantly by the documentary TV producer which initially lured to do the work just because looking for the commercial success possibilities of the show. Although as the movie progresses the producer motivation shifted more on finding the truth.
Who is the killer? Since the movie started there is only few suspects. It is also very easy to guess the killer. Unfortunately the revelations are also feel so much shallow while with good writing it can be made more interesting. Also ultimate question on whether the woman is really has never been answered. Which crumble down all the potential good ending of the movie. All in all I think this movie only worth 6/10.
